excited to have him um I’ve been reached out to him for quite a while I had his chief Deputy on before I’ve got uh America Sheriff here in The Green Room um he’s the he’s a sheriff of panal County he’s had many appearances on live PD he’s also a candidate for US Senate put your hands together for Sheriff Mark Lamb sheriff thank you Steve for having me on and I apologize it took us a while to get this died in but uh just I don’t know a few weeks ago I thought you know who’s who’s been who I haven’t gotten back with Steve and I went on there and and got it logged on got got got us a dates set brother I appreciate it you know I never doubted you you know why because you actually did write back and I was like if he wrote back that because I know you’re a busy guy because I see you on Fox News I see on TV I’m like if he wrote back he is probably gonna come on and here we are hey I love doing these things especially with fellow coppers too that that means a lot so thank you for what you’re doing for being a voice for all of us and uh it’s my honor to be on the show today man I love to have you by the way I have to say northeast big hat Envy you the hat so did you grow up in that part of the country first of all so my dad was from Chandler Arizona which is this part of the country uh I actually grew up on the big island in Hilo Hawaii really born there and was there till I was 11 then we moved to the Philippines and then came back here to Arizona and I was always a kid who wore boots and a hat and then um moved to Panama Central America uh then we moved then I was in Argentina for a couple years and came back here and so I’ve pretty much been in Arizona ever since except for stint for several years in Utah where I was a dairyman no kidding well you got the cred then so for us it’s like when we see you guys in the southwest it’s like this is like the cowboy police it’s like these guys the Hat you’re a sheriff I mean it doesn’t to me it doesn’t get any better than that it’s like it’s so freaking awesome man especially um being in the Northeast and dealing with the politics we deal with is like to see someone you like you on television speaking the truth you know boldly like you don’t care at all like you don’t like the lockdown stuff all that stuff you were like um yeah um vaguely interesting let me tell you what I think yeah we’re not doing that that’s my philosophy we’re not doing that I you know I always tell people look I’m not the government I’m your I’m your county sheriff I’m here to protect you from the bad guys and from government overreach and so what I saw was a lot of government overreach and I am that guy that still goes out and does the job I had a news Nation out with me recently and they did a live piece for about uh an hour on just last week and the guy was telling me he says you know I wasn’t sure if you were the real deal I see you on TV I see you doing these things I thought for sure you had an Entourage or people following you around when you’re out there working he goes it’s just you and you’re just out here on the the I 10 interstate and you’re pulling cars over I had one this morning pulled a car over coming off the reservation and pulled it over had two illegals in the back start doing the investigation the driver a male front seat passenger female find out she’s got fenel pills with her so probably I don’t know 30 40 fentanyl pills maybe and uh so border patrol took the driver for smuggling uh took the two in the back for being in the country illegally and then I took the we took the drive the pass passenger for she had a state side extraditable warrant so that’s a big deal in Arizona to have a warrant that they’ll extradite you anywhere in the state for uh for fenel as well and so not a good day for them uh good day for us though but it was me I’m out there doing it brother it’s so cool it it’s crazy because now that you say that um I see your videos and I’m like this guy’s like a he’s a working sherff like he he’s not he’s not just like behind a desk pulling levers like I see you walking into encampment out in the desert I’m like my gosh he’s he’s really out there this is nuts yeah that the one I posted about a week ago we walked my son and I I took him with me just in case so I had a second person with me so we actually walked a mile up this hill and I’m 51 going on 52 this year and while I’m in decent shape I I still got to the top of that hill and I was huffing puffing a little bit um but yeah still doing it man out there walking in the desert uh doing the job I love it we’re cops you know here at our agency part of the reason why we have a lot of success bringing people to this agency and we have fun doing our job is because we’re being led by cops and that’s how we love to do it yeah that that’s the way that’s the way to lead man it’s it’s really cool and I also love I mean another thing that would like get the people’s um panty hos in Northeast all bound up is um you and the chief deputy there um Thomas uh range days like it’s so cool like you guys just ripping fully auto handguns like if you had a chief of the Poli chief of police in um like the Northeast do that they would like oh my goodness he’s going to use that on us you know like no like it’s it’s just it’s just a good time man I love that yeah we’re doing a fundraiser this coming Saturday and the the ad that’s going to go out today on my social media is me ripping a uh I think it’s a 249 so yeah we love our we love our guns we love our machine guns out here that’s for dang sure hell yeah man I I delivered them where I work and believe it or not Massachusetts does have machine gun licenses still and you can um you know do the paperwork with the ATF and get a a short barrel and all all kinds of stuff so but we deliver them like when they come in the chief of police be like hey this guy got this permit just bring it to his house and um the people are always kind of like oh thanks and I’m and I’m always having a much of question dude what’s a what’s a gun you’re building can I see it like this is cool and they’re like oh you think it’s cool I’m like yeah dude guns are awesome like they they they kind of feel like we’re there to take their guns you know yeah I’m not the federal government I don’t care about that yeah exactly I’m not not the ATF we believe in the Second Amendment here and like everybody in Arizona’s got guns um and it’s common so it’s funny because we have people from the East Coast come out here and they’ll see people just walking around in stores with guns guns or me walking around with a gun and a badge I was actually in Maryland doing an event I think it was with Richard Petty and I was standing at a booth and I had my gun and my badge on just like how I look right now and somebody said are you do you have permission or how did you get permission to to carry that gun I said I didn’t ask just I’m wearing it but if you have if you do want to know it’s the garbage Patriot Act that gave me the permission did do yeah the leosa there that gave us the the right to have the guy I mean that um that was like the one the the one the kind of The Shining Star that came out of that and they’ve tried to get rid of it but they haven’t been able to yeah that’s the only thing good about everything else has been used by the federal government against us so I know that that is so um and I know a lot of people and I was pretty young when that when that started going through but even then I kind of had the inkling of like well it’s like you’re ra ra for the team you think you like and then you go uh this seems like it could definitely be weaponized against US citizens for looking at anything they want well Thomas Payne has the best quote and if you don’t know who Thomas payon was he was one of the founding fathers he wrote The American crisis he wrote Common Sense but he says the greatest tyrannies are always perpetrated in the name of the noblest causes you know co co was the same way they started telling everybody oh you got to stay home and you got to wear a mask because you got to protect other people like no those people are more than welcome to stay home we’re not going to impede on everybody else’s uh constitutional rights so no we’re not doing the lockdowns we’re not doing the mass mandates we’re not doing the vaccine mandates yeah that’s what they’re trying to push now I noticed that they have like this new campaign of like hey forgiveness you know we might have re overreacted a little bit you know it’s like whoa whoa easy like now now we’re just supposed to forget this happened oh man and those folks were not forgiving at all trust me I felt the wrath of them I mean I’m over here in Arizona saying we’re not doing the lockdowns we’re not doing all that then I go to the White House and I walk into the White House and I wasn’t I had done a uh I’ll tell you the story T take a few a couple minutes but I I had done this campaign thing for my Sheriff’s campaign because I was going through a reelection and I had 600 people show up and this is at the end of May right at the beginning of June and we didn’t we weren’t wearing masks or anything like that so the next day I get this phone call and I wasn’t feeling great I get this phone call from the White House and they said hey we want to have you come out president Trump’s gonna be signing this thing blah blah blah blah blah I’m like hell yeah I’ll come so the next day Monday I go to work I tell my staff hey I’m gonna go to the DC tomorrow I’m gonna go to the White House and so Tu Monday night I fly out get there Tuesday morning I’m not feeling real great so I take some Dayquil I go into the White house they take my temperature all good I’m like I said oh sweet I’m must just be tired from uh that event uh then they go inside and they do the old tickle test you know yeah and they said if we if we don’t hear from us in seven or eight minutes then you’re good to go great so I go upstairs I’m just kind of loung waiting around I get a phone call 202 number seven minutes later hey Sheriff you still here yeah you got to come back down you have Co oh so now I’m a pariah you know so now I go back down to the infirmary and they test me again they test me this time with the one that goes all the way to your brain and they said hey 45 minutes we’ll let you know but I knew my day was done so I’m looking for rental cars because if I fly home I know the media is just going to crucify me so they come back 45 minutes later and they said yep Sheriff you have you have Co so they TI me out the back like a two bit [ _ ] kick me out on the street B to the house 10 times never been out that exit um they take me out the back kick me out on the street and I go straight over and get my car and drive home but somewhere along the lines when I notified my people because I had meetings on Monday they uh somebody leaked it to the media and this is the purpose of telling you this story is I saw how awful people were when they didn’t agree with you for not staying at home or not wearing a mask or not getting vaccinated they were they were willing to to send you off to some concentration camp many of them were and now all of a sudden they’re like oh well things were said it’s okay we’ll just we’ll let it be water under the bridge yeah yeah yeah hell no that that that is um it’s funny because I I had friends that like really went the other way and they were very scared and I get it because they they tried to scare you so it works on some people it doesn’t matter how smart you are some people get very scared and um they were like you know one of my friends is kind of rattling off like well we you know so and so he died and so and so like cuz I told him like I don’t know anybody who got it that wasn’t okay like everybody I know was okay like it was it was like a bad it was bad but they were fine and everybody that these people named to me were like 700 lb you know they had all these comorbidities I’m like yeah well the plan should have been protect people like that give them the info and say hey if you need to work from home maybe that’s what you should do but like let the world keep operating like don’t send the able-bodied people behind bars and then you know just for the sake of people like yeah if you have if you have something like that where you feel like you could die then we’ll make accommodations for you but we don’t need to make accommodations for everybody else well that’s basically what I told the governor’s office you know I I’m not a scientist but I’m a realist and I could look at the writing on the wall and we were responding to houses and I remember within the first week I went and met with the health department I said how many people have died and they had a couple people died and I said of what what Co comorbidity factors did they have and those things because never once did we respond to somebody’s house where somebody died in their house from Co so I knew that this wasn’t there was something more to everybody was dying at at homes or in the hospitals or on ventilators and not to say that people didn’t die other than that and and my heart goes out to any one of those people but I could see what was going on and I can see that we went from 24 million cases of the flu or 30 million whatever it was to zero so clearly this was we were replacing the flu with Co so I wasn’t about to jeopardize people’s rights for that and when the governor’s office said hey Sheriff what do you think we should be doing different I said stop stop [ _ ] footing around it and tell people hey if you have bad health if you’re overweight if you have you know any other health concerns you probably want to stay home the rest of you it’s okay if you take the chance of going out these are some of the risk you run but really the ones that needed to be careful were the ones that had um other health issues but they weren’t willing to say that they were just they felt like it was safer just to tell everybody to stay home and I had a problem with that yeah absolutely yeah it’s it’s a gross overreach I mean believe me when when it started we had a new baby we I’ve three kids and our our newest baby was born and the first two weeks of it I was just watching TV and watching like videos of people in China just fall down in public and we were like oh my gosh so and I’m you know I just was getting that information so I was at ALDI with rubber gloves and a mask on like getting our food I would take it home and I would wipe the food down and I told my wife I’m like I feel like a crazy person but I just don’t know but but through 3 weeks from then all this new information started coming in like all more information started coming in and that was my big problem with it was like okay you scared the crap out of us in the beginning and we and I reacted like that but then as it came in we did not adjust was like wait wait we’re getting new information so I I get it like I I can understand the initial reaction but when you get more information from from doctors in in the medical community outside of like couchy like you should adjust to what’s going like okay maybe this isn’t necessary it was scary for a second there but we kind of have a hold on it now and we can see the what the morbidity rate is and like what what it will actually do to somebody who’s 40 which is probably nothing so let’s adjust and then do what you and I just talked about let’s let’s let’s proceed but be careful with people who could could fall prey to this but that didn’t happen that did not happen and it didn’t happened for like years and that’s what drove us crazy yeah I I could see it right from the beginning and while I I I took a couple weeks to just look and see what I was seeing look at everything around it but I never did anything I never changed a thing I never wore masks when I went out to people’s houses told my deputies don’t bother wearing masks I want them to see your face when you show up um got into it with the schools got into it with everybody I said don’t make these kids wear masks there’s no there’s no proof that the kids are even getting Co you’re going to do more damage putting masks on them at school than you are with the co if they actually get Co so even that with that they were still kind of doing their thing at the schools and that but we were much better than most places and I think because of that now people look back and say thank goodness we had Sheriff lamb that was a voice a reason in it and and people were not happy about it and I told people I said look I get that you’re not happy but your constitutional rights mean a lot to me and I’m going to do everything I can to protect him yeah absolutely and I I even I hate to say the term uh slippery slope you know what I mean that that’s the way it works though the slippery slope and we’ve seen it in so many political venues where it’s like they they get they get in and then before you know it drag queens are performing for your kid at the library and it’s like how did we get here oh the slippery slope but that you know that’s that’s bigoted to say that but it’s like like you said you’re a realist and you can look at the world and make a determination that’s what it is right I looked at the evidence and the evidence didn’t support what they were telling me they were feeding they were I have a healthy distrust for what I what they’re said you know telling me anyway but um they were certainly not and they were crafting the message they were they were pushing good things like Iber meon down and other if a if a scientist said hey this doesn’t make sense they were eliminating those voices um so there was a lot of things that were concerning to me at one point I had to go out to Massachusetts they wanted me to come out there and I they said well you have to be vaccinated you have to wear a mask I said I’m not coming then and they said no no no you gotta come we’ll we’ll make it so you don’t have to be vaccinated and I said I don’t know I still don’t know if I want to come and I like M I like Boston yeah and finally I I said okay I’m gonna come out there but I’m not doing any of that stuff so I didn’t get a vaccine showed up at the hotel never wore a mask I remember one lady came up to me and she goes are we do we have to wear masks and I go I don’t know you can do whatever you want I’m not wearing a mask I wasn’t about do it I wasn’t gonna play the game I just I don’t know people can say what they want about me I just wasn’t gonna play the game and to me freedom is is everything and so I’m gonna do everything I can to air on the side of protecting freedom and those kind of things and protecting my team my crew that’s my job as a leader my job is to take the helm during stormy SE like puus says anybody can hold the helm when the seas are calm and in police work what we needed now then more than ever coming off of what happened in Minnesota then straight into Co what we needed were leaders that were going to hold down that were going to look after the crew that were going to make sure that the crews needs were met and that was going to keep the ship going in the right direction so when the storm subsided we were on the other side in the right place and that’s what we did as leadership we took care of our crew we made sure their needs were taken care of and we kept this the the the ship on a steady path hell yeah man I mean and by the way just to to relieve your emotions I’m sure the uh ion is now the authorities are saying is good so it just it took a little bit um yeah my buddy I go to church with um his friend’s a doctor so during this whole thing he gets covid he gets icin called into the local pharmacy in Massachusetts goes to pick it up the pharmacist refus to fill it so he tells his buddy and who’s a doctor and and the doctor’s like oh hell no he’s not tell I’m a doctor he’s got to fill it so he calls the pharmacy he’s like how dare you I’m an MD your job is to fill the medicine I give you not to make a judgments call based on politics to not give to my patient and I said well good for him but I mean the balls on this guy to not give a patient medicine descri prescribed by a doctor but that’s all over though like there was a lot of phaces stepping up and imposing their Politics on on what was happening really really gross brother all right Sheriff I want to go back I want to go way back to uh to uh pre- Sheriff lamb um possibly Deputy lamb um can you remember the first time you responded to like a hot call the first call that you went to that really got your your blood pumping that’s probably when I did my first Ride Along you know I I I was 33 years old business owner never thought about being a cop did not grow up thinking I wanted to be a cop none of that so my neighbor says hey you want to go on a ride along I’m like yeah sure you know whatever and it was on an Indian reservation and the Indian reservation is right next to Mesa tempy in Scottdale so while it is sparsely populated um it’s still right next to some of these big cities so I go on this ride along graveyard ship and one of the calls we get was a dad had found a 20-year-old a hot tone a 20-year-old with his 14-year-old daughter so the dad and the guy get into a scuffle guy runs out the back we show up and if you’re not familiar with the reservations if especially if you’re from Mass or in the east coast you know we have these reservations in the desert and you’ll have a house and then not much behind it maybe some Farms every now and then you’ll have an old abandoned travel trailer or something that’s how this was so I’m out there they let me out of the car so I’m out there walking around armed with a flashlight and Cur that was it thinking I know what I’m doing and I’m looking around in the desert and and I see this old abandoned travel trailer so I look in the window and amongst all this trash and old clothes and debris I see what I think is a quarter size of skin in that pile so I’m like hey I think he’s right here so they go in there they move the stuff sure enough he’s there they grab them they rough them up they tase them put them in cuffs I went home that morning and I said told my wife I woke her up and said hey I’m going to be a cop and I I that was the first Hot tone I responded to and it was when before I was even a cop and it changed my life completely because next thing you know six months later I’m in the academy and then I’m out there starting my career on the reservation a couple years into that I’m a gang and Drug detective doing a whole bunch of stuff there and then all of a sudden I hit this time where I thought I don’t like the way this country’s going and instead of being the guy who complain there was two things I didn’t like the way the country was going and I thought that leadership and law enforcement was really lacking there was a lot of supervisors there wasn’t a lot of leaders yeah and so instead of being the guy who [ _ ] about it I thought I’m gonna change that I’m gonna run for Sheriff that was in 2011 when I made that decision 2012 I took a a leap a huge pay cut went to the county and basically kind of started taking it from there but yeah my first hot to uh was before I was even a cop that’s awesome so when you I mean you were relatively new in law enforcement um when you were thinking about Sheriff like that that’s kind of a gamble right because I don’t understand how in the Northeast um Sheriff’s run the jails period so they they don’t really Patrol um that might change in the future but as of right now they kind of run the jails but what I from what I do understand is um um When a sheriff comes in he can kind of Clean House of up upper admin or if you run against somebody and they don’t like you could they get rid of you as a deputy like is that is that a is that possible yeah or they’d make your life miserable it’d be hard to get rid of you even though we’re not unionized out here we have an officer’s Bill of Rights so those agencies have to follow those officers Bill of Rights to be able to get rid of you but they can make life miserable for you they can certainly stick you out in you know the boo dos and we have big my county is the size of the state of Connecticut so there’s a lot of places they can stick you in a county the size of the state of Connecticut I was actually only in law enforcement about 10 years when I ran for Sheriff and I just had left the county so that I could run for Sheriff because I didn’t want them to screw with me I’d never had any write-ups I didn’t want them to all the start all of a sudden start piling writeups on me you know because I was running against them and so went back out and started a a marketing company pest controllable company ended up in marketing solar with our marketing company and that was kind of what got me to that point was I needed to make a little extra money anyway so I was fortunate enough to uh run in 2015 2016 won the same night that President Trump won and was able to take office January 1st of 2017 man what is that like when a a new sheriff takes office like when you walk in does the guy obviously the guy you beat probably doesn’t stick around to show you anything like so like cuz where I’m at if like say you’re the next in line the chief’s going to retire he’d be like all right you know what I’m I’m going to hang out the town the town or City’s going to pay me for a month I’m G to hang out show you the admin stuff kind of like or or he’s already started breaking in the deputy the deputy chief or lieutenant or whoever so when you take over a sheriff is it just like a fire hose like you have to figure that all out it’s pretty much a fire hose in most places it is a fire hose completely these guys were pretty good they um the guy who was the chief Deputy obviously Matt Thomas is now telling them hey buddy you’re out I’m in and so that was a little bit more sticky of a relationship uh between Matt and him but they did give us a little small space at the sheriff’s office and they started kind of letting us get our feet feet underneath us just the tiniest little bit um but it was still like drinking from a fire host because January 1st at midnight you are now the sheriff and you have all the keys to the kingdom per se literally and figuratively they give you a whole stack of keys you now have access to pretty much everything in the Sheriff’s Office you are the guy and it takes a little bit of time to kind of like figure out hey we’re the ones that make these decisions yeah there is no higher place to go and that takes a little bit of getting used to no matter how confident you are as a leader it takes a little bit of getting used to remember oh we’re the guys we’re the ones Mak decisions so Matt and I had kind of worked through that and it was kind of a battered wife syndrome too we were dealing with people that flinched every time you did something within the agency because of just the way it was before we took office and so we had to come in and really gain back the trust some of the things took two three years um a lot of it we were able to kind of turn over really quick with little small moves um that we started gaining the trust of these guys but slowly we got it three four years into it I think our lieutenants were probably the hardest line to get the message to and they were screwing us because we passed the message down it wasn’t always getting down to the sergeants or it was changing and so we finally just had a a real heart heart tohe heart with our tenants like knock this [ _ ] off and you guys got to start delivering the message we’re delivering we don’t care if you like it or not and then it started really flowing and it wasn’t anything bad it just cops you know cops are they hate the way things are change and so getting them outside of their comfort zone and making them understand that the moves that we were making were going to be better for them in the long run and once we once they realized that and we got rid of some people there were some people that were not really helpful we started kind of getting rid of them or they were moving on on their own um we’ve kind of protected it now and I know I’m rambling on and I’ll stop after this we’ve kind of protected it now to where you could get rid of the chief the chief over the jail the deputy Chiefs so you could probably get rid of three positions we protected the captain on down and the next Sheriff if he’s not a friend of mine is probably not going to like that but we did it so that we didn’t lose what this Sheriff’s Office is there is a a legacy and people are down for the brand at this Sheriff’s Office and we wanted to make sure we protected that as much as possible no matter who came into the office yeah smart man that sounds stressful brother um did were you picking up the phone to like other County Sheriffs I would be like calling the County over and be like hey what do you do with this like even just admin stuff you know sometimes but for the most part I think half of us were new that time out of the 15 well there was only 15 sheriffs in Arizona so out of the 15 seven of us were new wow so have a I don’t have and mine’s the third largest county so if I’m calling somebody else they really don’t know what my problem is the two sheriffs that had bigger counties they were they were new as well so what we found is we just went off of what we knew to be right and we tried things and if it didn’t work we said hey that didn’t work and we changed it we’re not those kind of guys that ride some something into the ground because we don’t want to we don’t want to say that we made the wrong decision no like if we screwed it up we said hey that didn’t work we tried we’ll try something different now yeah man it that is tough like the it I grew up on Cape Cod the peninsula that six out of mass and um a friend of mine was a senator from Massachusetts and he ran for Barnesville County sheriff and he’s a retired state trooper Sergeant great guy down to earth um Christian guy just just smart guy and he lost like by hair to an attorney in a pants suit to be sheriff and I’m I’m I’m looking at the results and I’m going how is she gonna she’s never been a cop her entire life and now she’s the sheriff of barnable County like a a very a county with a lot of money jails the whole deal and I’m like I just didn’t get it I’m like how is she going to get it or or how are they going to accept her she’s never even been a cop you know yeah and that that can happen it doesn’t happen very often out here because we are full service Sheriff’s offices so you’ll be hard pressed to get a guy who hasn’t been a cop that’s that becomes a sheriff right but yeah that that can certainly happen is you can end up with somebody that has no idea what’s going on and just so you guys know everybody out in Mass I’m gonna give you my pedigree so I’m probably more mass than most Mass people I’m I’m descended of eight of the occupants of the Mayflower and then the land side to uh Boston in 1630 on the windr fleet most of my family members came into Boston and New England uh early on in the 16 early 1700s so Mass right here man yeah I love it that’s great and you know what um Boston is it is a great City like when you go there it they I say this all the time about the about the Liberals and mass they tow the party line but they are fans of Law and Order like you you will not find things you find in New York or Chicago or LA in Boston Boston PD um pretty much keeps it squared away they don’t hold them back all the PDS Mass have gotten raises through the pandemic through the George Floyd stuff um so they they they cry they they’re like California Jr the way they speak but they they want Cops I’ve noticed that you know I’m really good friends with a couple of the sheriffs out there nick coochi uh oh yeah really good friends with Peter kusan and middle sex County really good friends with Joe McDonald down in Plymouth which we just did a fundraiser out there not too long ago um the uh there was used to be uh Patrick uh mcder out in because I’m a big huge Patriots fan my family on a trip and uh this was when Sheriff bot was still there and he took us got us into the Patriots we bought the tickets but he like first class service man dropped us off right at the front curb and when the game was over he had two black SUVs waiting for me and my family to get us out out of there as well so that’s beautiful hell yeah coachi he is Breaking the Barrier he is putting deputies on patrol he he was the first one in Mass to start um you know these communities have a need and they’re not getting covered and he’s offered it and he’s actually breaking that that barrier good for him I love that guy man I know his agency went through a tough time recently um they had something real tragic happened one of their close employees so my heart goes out to them but Nick coachi a great guy loves the golf man loves the golf hell yeah yeah he’s um he’s doing it man it’s like it’s kind of i to describe it to you would be difficult but it’s like in Massachusetts all the Chiefs um every town has to have a chief of police so it’s like um there’s all these little foms and um I get it where it’s like even where I work like it it would be easy for the county I’m in to start policing and then these little towns go oh you know we don’t need Steve and the rest of that crew we’ll just open a sheriff satellite office in that town and we’ll pay them less than what we’re paying to budget a police department and they’ll go bye-by so that’s kind of where the the push back comes where it’s like you have every town is required to have these positions and but it’s becoming because of believe it or not because of the new police reform Massachusetts did they are requiring way more out of the chiefs of police and the officers to be up to par with their new standards which cost money of course it costs a lot of money so these little towns with like two three 4,000 people are going uh we don’t want to pay half a million dollars for our Police Department that we never paid that before where do we go the state police is over taxed and we we don’t want to raise our residents taxes any higher you have the sheriff and then so the chiefs of police around where I work are kind of like we don’t want to see them hitting the roads because it’s going to possibly destroy our police departments but the caveat to that is most of these towns want their own local guys they know they can get to know and also I always said and that it kind of goes in the face of it but I always said like if the county wants to come in and make me a sergeant at the county level okay because those guys make about 20 grand more than I make so if I have to be a sergeant Deputy uh okay hey no so be it right yeah sorry what can I say and they work for the sheriff which is great because the sheriff is an elected official somebody asked me recently they said oh do you gonna have a do you have a Citizens review board I said yeah it’s called an election every two four years the citizens don’t like it uh they’re going review me and not vote me back in but we’re not going to let civilians go in and look and see what and have civilians who have no idea what police work is go in and judge whether or not we did it right or wrong now no way that’s what New York has New York City has they’ve had that for 30 years and it’s a disaster they have citizens on their on their disciplinary boards and it’s like guys they need to be trained up a little bit because they don’t understand tactics in police work so uh yeah they’re going to they’re think this looks kind of rough and who who pays the price the officer whose job’s on the chop The Chopping Block you know we’re not in the business of good Optics I’ve told that people I tell my citizens all the time we’re showing up to terrible situations that you it was so bad you guys had to call the cops so when we show up Optics is not always on our side but what we do is we protect your constitutional rights and if you break the law we’re going to hold you accountable we’ll always do it in respectful and dignified manner but we kind of let those people dictate well if they want to push it further then we’re we can go there too yeah absolutely I I I was on a call the other night when I I said that to somebody and they were it was a contentious domestic and it was like listen we’re not because he was talking about her marriage counselor I go we’re not marriage counselors that’s not what we are we we got five minutes here to decide what to do with this situation we’re not going to fix your problems you’ve been married to this guy 30 years so you might as well just start telling us the truth about what happened tonight so we can enforce the law because um we’re not we’re not going to sit down here with a paw Pawa and and figure out your life the whole problems with your life for the last 30 years that’s not our job our job is enforcing criminal law we we don’t do we don’t do all all this other stuff we just don’t have time and it it gets um it gets frustrating when people are like you know they really want the cops to and I get it like I don’t mind wearing a bunch of different hats and helping people when they need help and and being a empathetic ear that that’s that’s great but sometimes it’s like hey this isn’t this is way out of my purview like I’m not I’m not I’m not here to tell you how to how to fix this problem but you know did he choke you tonight like that just give give us what’s going on exactly yeah it can get real frustrating Sheriff um can you describe a strange or bizarre thing you dealt with in your line of work oh man Lots it’s the Southwest brother yeah you know you see and plus I was on the reservation for my you know better part of my my career uh before I became the sheriff so you know how it is any cop out there listening right now knows that when you think you’ve seen it all you there’s more you can see you know we’ve been on accidents where people are up in the trees you want how they got up in the trees d uh we’ve had some some awful violent things that we’ve responded to obviously those are the ones we try to forget um you see some quirky things where you they start to tell you things and you think wow I did not see that coming um and that’s over time you just start to condition to get more and more used to the real bizaar to the point where I think nothing surprises you anymore every time we go through something nothing surprises you we have one today we’re get as we speak my team’s out I was wanting to be there but I had this podcast we’re out arresting a child molester and he actually a little while back faked his own suicide so that we wouldn’t find him so that we thought he was dead and he has been 10 years in default on on his um you know registering each time so GE he’s going to go today we’re going to do a video on it uh tomorrow and but things like that where people that’s not even one of the more bizarre ones but that’s one we’re dealing with today have you ever been like with non non law enforcement people family friends that a cookout or whatever and you’re saying something that you think is just like kind of mundane and you look at them and they’re like like what the hell are you talking about you’re just telling a story and then all of a sudden you realize you’re shocking these people yeah was giving you the elbow like shut up yeah my wife will say I didn’t even know that you never told me that like oh that’s what happened that’s police work on the reservation I was a gang and Drug detective you just saw crazy things all the time and people were really not that compliant um so we would get in fights all the time physical altercations we had a guy that is currently my jail Chief and he’s a big strong dude and he’s pretty good at putting hands on people and we were in this big fight in this house with these people and he takes his guy and throws him through the wall and the guy goes through the wall comes out the other side comes running back in through the hallway with drywall dust all over because out here in Arizona we got drywall walls you know back of throw them in it’ be brick but out here it’s uh through the drywall uh he came back out running with his and I had another one where it was a drive by shooting and they they lit this house up 30 rounds is how many the AK-47 rounds cutting right through the house and there was people laying on the couches we did the we were looking at the trajectory and they those bullets had just barely missed this lady by her head there was people all over on the floor there’s people in the bedroom but there was one guy in the bathroom and so the kicks out drive by shooting we got one subject hit so we show up and it’s the middle of the winter even though it’s not Massachusetts weather it still gets cold in the desert and it was a cold night I show up I walk in there and this place is a known a known turd hangout it’s stunk and I walk in there and I said who shot who shot and this guy he says oh this sh that’s me he had a beer in his hand and a cigarette in one no shirt on well he had drop wall dust all over his back he was actually sitting on the crapper when they did the driveby shooting and one of the bullets rips through the outer wall in through the hallway through the hallway wall into the bathroom and hits him right in this and he was a heavy dude probably 400 pounds hits him right here in this back fat and lodges right up here in his in his in his H pet oh and he was just smoking and having a beer went to the hospital he was back before we even cleared the the scene but that was a bizarre one because how nobody died on that drive by shooting I don’t know oh my God I hope it didn’t interrupt his BM you know hope he got it all out I’m sure it did I’m sure it did just to show you how bad of a house that was this is not as funny that guy one of the people that lived there had three children with his daughter so that gives you an idea what kind of turd house it was my goodness wow Sheriff can you tell us about your most intense or terrifying moment you know you’ll know this Steve when you get in those moments I don’t think they’re terrifying to you you know I just you’re just running towards the danger and adrenaline’s kicking in training’s kind of kicking in and you’re just doing your thing we were actually on the reservation again we were at this uh this house of these kind of former gangsters they were still gangsters but their part of their own gang drove by the house while we were out front and they had their red bandanas over their faces and we had our backs to them and so when they drove by the people in front their faces changed and they said did you see that we said no well what they said those guys drove by they named them they said they just drove by and they were throwing out gang signs and had red bandanas all over their or had red bandanas on so we jump in our car we chase after the car we catch up to the car leaving this what we call blood compound and right as they’re leaving they they start breaking all these traffic laws not stopping at the stop signs and so we catch up to them pull a traffic stop the chicks being real uncooperative and while we’re dealing with the traffic stop we get a phone call from the the people saying they’re shooting at us they’re shooting at us well she had dropped the two gangsters off and they went back they doubled back around back to the house we’re now stuck on this traffic stop so I run back I throw her ID in the car we run back jump in our car we head down in that blood compound we come skidding to a stop as we see these two dudes with red bandanas on their faces we pop out and we’re in plain clothes I got a Dicky shirt on and and oh pull my gun out we’re like free and they kind of hesitate and then they take off so we run after him we’re chasing him through this Blood compound I clothesline this guy put him down well what we had realized is that moment when we pulled up the guns had fallen through their baggy pants out their pant leg down at the on the ground and um here we are fighting with these guys in the middle of this Blood compound while while we never thought about the danger it was extremely dangerous just to show you how dangerous about a year later those same guys from that same blood compound shot and killed with an AK-47 one of our fellow officers out at that reservation so wow not good and um we didn’t you know I think you don’t really realize the dangers we put ourselves in because we’re just doing it and then when it’s after the fact somebody points out and they think that didn’t seem too safe no it wasn’t that was what our job was yeah hell yeah damn man the Bloods are like they’re on reservations well let me tell you why they’re even worse on the reservations because they’re not based on territory or drug sales or or any of that it’s based on familial ties so these families grow up is either Bloods or Southside 18th Street or Crips and it’s family stuff so there’s no money involved there’s no uh territory or any of that this is about I don’t like because you wear a different color than my family geez man I used to I used to wig out about that when I I I did uh I was a background investigator working for LAPD for a couple years and um I used to go into uh South Central and and East LA and stuff and uh I used to be I’d always talk to the guys I work with that were like longtime LPD coppers and be like what is this street what do you think should I bring somebody else or not cuz it’s like you know am I am I going to get killed if I wear blue or red or what do I do and they’re they’re they’re always like and I talked to a gang guy and he was like listen they’re going to see you you know orange hair white guy and they’re going to go he’s not from the the neighborhood he’s either like he’s either a cop uh like a Mormon or he’s like they’re like an insurance guy like they they’re not going to they’re probably not going to screw with you you You’ be more likely to get screwed with if you if you look differently and you weren’t in you were from the hood but since you’re not you were such an outlier that like they said just make sure you they’re like shake the fences because you don’t want to get bit by pitbull but besides that you know abua will probably invite you in for a p soup or something you know it’s true man those are hardcore guys those La guys those crash unit guys you used to have back in the day they could tell you some stories yeah I’ve had a few of them on and it’s like it’s crazy man the the the the the stories they went through and I think they like um I think they rank up at the right time because you start in your 20s when you’re like let’s do it and then before you know it you’re running a table then you get a little bit higher and like you’re I I’m not sure you could sustain that at any level being the contact officer you know what I mean yeah I was a gang and Drug detective for a long time I couldn’t have kept doing it it’s a young man’s game for a lot of it even though you’re still good you’re still fit you’re just a little bit slower than you used to be we have a ghost unit Our Gang and habitual offender Strike Team these dudes are big they’re bad they’re tough we put them through all sorts of stuff um and they’re going to put a hurting on you if they are looking for you and find you and those guys last probably five or six years and then they kind of are out because they’re just it’s a lot to go after these Bad Dudes nonstop so yeah it’s a little bit of a young man’s game um I loved it when I did it I’ve been a cop for 20 years never used my Taser uh I like to go handson if you’re gonna have an opportunity to go hands on I never like those to go to waste so because they’re getting fewer and far between but I use the taser to let the cats chase the little red light around yeah and it makes sense I mean um you know you’re a man of God so am I and it’s kind of like when you when you start to level up in life you get a wife you got to care for her take care of her make sure she’s safe then you start having kids and you really that balance is like well you know my primarily my my job is to take care of this family you know what I mean and I I think when you if if you stay in that that high that high-intensity stuff for a long time you’re not seeing your family you’re not you’re not home for them you’re you’re you’re really putting your the head of the household is putting him his himself at risk for for being killed that I think that weighs on a lot of people where they see like you know that that kind of adds into the young man game kind of idea you know what I mean well when I became a cop at 34 I was married with five kids already so oh man you were behind it I was way behind and I had those kids the whole time I was doing that then I ran for Sheriff and being in politics was even hard harder in a different sense because you still are not seeing your kids and we certainly saw an effect on one or two of our kids um you know but that’s unfortunately there’s a sacrifice that has to be made there’s nothing that comes with there all good stuff has some level of risk involved and uh uh ultimately when I look back on it it’s still all worth it uh however I will tell you there’s certainly a toll whether you’re a ganging guy or whatever unit you’re on that takes a lot of your time away and is intense uh and also running for office all of those things pull you away from your family your family often time TimeWise becomes secondary to whatever else you’re doing I’m not saying that’s the way it should be but that’s often what happens and so you have to take a step back and say hold on my family’s more important than this stuff is yeah I can see that I mean um on the flip side of what I was saying there there I believe your vocation is a calling of God you know you’re you’re where you need to be you’re you’re doing what you need to do and there are sacrifices to be made and um I think we need we need really good good men to to do these jobs so um you know that that that might be the sacrifice you have to make but um God’s got us all the way so we’re we’re going to we’re going to be okay but um yeah man that’s uh God bless you and obviously I’m me and a bunch of other people out there are glad that you did it well thank you and I’m I’m I feel the support across this country and I always ask guys I’m like hey as long as the cops out there are good with the things we’re doing then that’s what matters to me because I never want to cast a bad Shadow on on any of the men and women that put on the badge every day we do a lot of what we do the Fridays with Frank the live PD the 60 days in uh American Sheriff Network which is now True Blue uh all of these things we do and we did because we love this profession and we want to show it in a good light and we also want to show real deal what’s happening out there yeah I love it man you know I know what I also love I just love it’s okay to be a dude a bro you know it’s okay to be a man it’s okay to want to kick ass get bad guys um lay it down that I mean we need we need dudes doing that and uh I don’t like this um this this counterculture of like the the the Nancy boy uh guy who’s got feelings we’re in the knit capap uh in the skinny jeans in the cafe like no uh bro you’re enjoying all those things you got because there’s guys willing to do the Dirty Work get out there and put their hands on people right that’s exactly right and I’ve raised my boys that way it’s better to live one day as a lion than a thousand years as a sheep ironically my last name’s lamb but it is it is much better to be a lion and it is okay it’s okay to be a a strong man who believes in God who believes in the rule of law who believes in doing doing what’s necessary to protect those things their family that is 100% okay especially in this Society we need those men now more than ever you know there’s a one of my favorite books is is the greatest salesman in the world by Aug mandino and it says I will persist until I succeed I was not born into this world into defeat nor to spell your course through my veins I’m not a sheep waiting to be proded by my shepherd I am a lion and I refuse to walk to talk to sleep with the sheep for there I refuse to listen to those who weep or complain for their disease is contagious let them join the cheap for the slaughterhouse of failure is not in my destiny I love it man hey also the lamb is a lion you know that that’s right that’s right have you ever thought played around maybe maybe it’s sacrilegious to say but fear the lamb maybe it’s not it’s not the best it’s not the best very I’m always very careful to not in any way equate myself with the real Lamb of God with the Lord yeah you don’t want to call down that wrath you know know because I’m running for the US Senate and nobody I think everybody agrees it’s a snake pit up there you know it’s Viper pit and I you know what they how they come up with antivenom for snake bites right and the way they do it is they take sheep Lambs or sometimes horses but they use a lot of sheep and Lambs because they’re robust and sturdy animals and they have good immune systems so they’ll take a little bit of Venom from these snakes give it to a sheep the sheep end ends up developing an antivenom and that’s how you protect yourself from snake bites so I’ve been telling people you need a lamb up there I am the antivenom to the snakes that are in Washington DC you Venom hell yeah I love it that’s great brother um Sheriff I’ve had you on here almost an hour just a couple more questions um can you tell us uh a positive situation you’ve had in law enforcement heartwarming tons I mean look what what we do on social media I get emails and messages every day of people Thanking us for what we do um you know I’ve we’ve saved babies I’ve saved people in my career uh you’ve I’ve watched people that you arrest early on and their life is on the wrong path only to run into them years later to have them thank you for holding them accountable when you did did that um I get to go to these schools I do a youth redirection program I’ve had over 200 kids go through that program and we run them through four classes which is goal setting and planning digital media social media sexting the dangers of those things we talk about drugs and alcohol we do a career night and then we make them do um community service which is horse therapy and we’ve had over 200 kids go through that program and we’ve had less than five reoffend um we are now at about a 77% success rate on our re-entry program for our adults that were moving from our jails and instead of prison sentences we are putting them in actual Rehabilitation programs one of them being a two-year program called the John Vulcan Academy and uh just to go see those men and see their faces and how this has changed and how the their mere countenance has changed you can see God coming back into their lives those are the things that they just I mean that’s my reward that’s reward here and it’s hopefully my reward in heaven but to see those changes in people has been the highlight of my career not to mention getting to be in the schools and and just all the things that we do to help families uh the list goes on and on those are the things we truly like to focus on in this profession anyway yeah beautiful man I love it um what one of the most popular questions we have on the show here here is um a lot of people who listen are on the fence or they’re thinking about law enforcement they want to get into it and one of the best emails I get and I get a lot of them and I get like I get Academy graduation pictures and all kinds of stuff because they hear people like you speaking about law enforcement and it really inspires them so what would your advice to be to police candidates do it we need Warriors now more than ever we need men and women that are willing to put on the badge it’s one of the most honorable professions I think it is the most important profession to America you know the founding fathers said it when they when they wrote the Constitution the first charge of it is not in the Articles or in the Bill of Rights it’s actually in the very Preamble of the Constitution when the founding father said we the people of the United States in order to form a more perfect union establish justice it’s the most important thing to the survivability of our Republic and we need people to do it now I actually when I do leaderships trainings I actually kind of call the leaders out because I say how many of you have been telling people when they ask oh would you let your son or daughter go into this profession no no no no I said how can you then later on complain about not being able to hire when you yourself are telling people not to do it great point I said leaders you must change your look at this job you must tell people yes we need people now more than ever and you know what we don’t struggle with with hiring why because we have that attitude of yes this is a great profession we want you if you want to come out here and be a cop and drive fast and carry a gun and uh hold people accountable when they make mistakes and protect people’s constitutional rights come to panal County will’ll hire you we’re hiring right now I love it Sheriff tell us about the run for Senate and what your plans are I plan on winning so that’s July 30th and uh we got to fix this country look there’s only so much I can do as a sheriff I can protect my herd from the Wolves but if somebody doesn’t go out and hunt those wolves they’re going to multiply and replenish and eventually even I can’t keep them from coming into my herd and so what I realize is the issues we’re facing as a country the top four issues no matter where you go even out in M Massachusetts when I went out there our border which includes like fenel and stuff the economy crime and National Security those are the top four issues no matter where you go and what I saw was these are issues that I’m very well schooled in I have a lot of experience nobody’s going to have more experience dealing with the Border than what I do in this race and not only that I’ll be the most knowledgeable senator in the Senate as it relates to border security the second thing is a budget I’ve been running a large budget in a large agency over $60 million I balance that budget I stay within that budget we need people that understand government’s role and that government needs to stay within the what the you know what they should be spending Which is far less than what they are spending they’re taking our tax dollars and they’re just throwing it all over the world and we as Americans are kind of fed up with that and then crime obviously my job is to keep the federal government out of state crime we need to let our local agencies state agencies do their job and the federal agencies should be held accountable for their uh what we’re seeing where I think they’re misappropriate applying the law many cases there certainly is not equal justice for all I think a lot of Americans feel that way so I hope to go back and be a cut into that and uh get that under control on a federal level and then National Security this is the greatest threat to our our our us As Americans is what’s happening on the southern border whether it’s these people coming from 170 different countries we have no idea who they are what kind of intentions they have they’re not being vetted the government’s then letting them in and using our tax dollars to pay for things for them that’s a problem and then the fenal poison he has become the leading cause of death in America amongst the ages of 18 to 45 so why am I running because I can’t stand on the corner and watch the building burn to the ground nor is it in my nature to stand there and wait for somebody else to run in I’m running in and I’ve got the ability and the C and the experience to deal with these issues so while I love being sheriff and this was a really hard decision for me and I’m certainly going to miss this profession I’ll be it till the sh till the end of this year I think Washington needs a new sheriff needs more cowboy hats and belt buckles and Real Americans back there that’ll actually have the best interest of the American people in mind I love it brother please tell me you’re going to wear that hat in the Senate you got to damn right I am hell yeah let them know the sheriff’s there so just so you know this is what I look like without the Hat when I’m in the chamber when I walk out this thing’s going right back on same with Bell Buckle same with the man they need they need they need to look at a law man every day when they leave you know what I mean they do hell yeah they held accountable those people need to be in in interviewed and I don’t want to I dare not use the word interrogation but they need that DC because these folks are a bunch of they’re a bunch of bureaucrats and technocrats who feel like they’re not responsible to the American people we’re going to change that and if you want to support me you can go to sheriff lam.com doesn’t matter if you live in Arizona believe it or not if you live in Massachusetts your senator from Arizona that senator from Arizona affects your life just as much as the one from Massachusetts does because senators are going to vote on bills for all 50 states whether it’s Nebraska Arizona Massachusetts wherever it is um those Senators matter to all of us so you can even if you live out of state and you want a good representative from Arizona uh Sheriff lam.com hell yeah go there everybody um Sheriff I hope when you go there I hope you give us um I hope you keep up with the videos and maybe even give us some live streams of like um what’s going on because just from like a a taxpayer like me like a on a very basic level um it’s we don’t know what’s going on like we had Scott Brown win one year in Massachusetts a Republican and he went down there and he pretty much cut the floor wipe with him because and it was different it was more it was more like an term Senator like there was a you know what I mean um there was another election closely afterwards but I I wish to this day that he let us know the barriers he was facing and what these people are really saying to him you know what I mean like what are they how are they cutting your legs out you know yeah well I’m gonna call it out look they need to be called out we can’t afford it there needs to be some some accountability from that level if anybody they should be wearing body cams not us everybody over you don’t even want to see the body cams from politicians though I don’t think your stomach could handle it yeah might be more interesting than ours I love it brother um it was an absolute honor to have you on uh thank you so much for coming I understand my video is kind of looks weird right now but the audio is good so no
